Childhood Cancer
Common Types of Childhood Cancer
Childhood cancer is a general term that refers to all of the types of cancer that may affect a child between birth and 15 years of age. These types of cancer may differ from adult cancers in the way they grow and spread, how they are treated, and how they respond to treatment.
Similarly to adult cancers, childhood cancers are diseases of the cells in which there is uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells that can crowd out normal, healthy cells in the body. In some cases, these cells can metastasize and spread to different places throughout the body.
Pediatric Oncology is a medical specialty focused on care for children with cancer, as it requires its own types of treatments and cures. With many types of treatments, come many different side effects and challenges.
